Teachers Brigade Book Fairy Reading Program
Reading is the Key to Fighting Learning Loss
Reading is the key to fighting learning loss and maintaining a child's current grade level skills, and for pushing forward to develop skills above the current grade level. When children are not in school, children and especially those from under-resourced communities, tend to lose roughly 20 percent of the gains they made in reading during the school year.
In response to the educational challenges surrounding COVID-19, Teachers Brigade is partnering with the Book Fairy and her volunteers to deliver books to children living in the Portland Metro Area.
If you are a Parent wanting books delivered by the Book Fairy to your child this school year, or if you're interested in being a Book Fairy Volunteer, please click on the book fairy button above.
Teachers Helping Teachers
Teachers Helping Teachers was the first program we offered. This platform was designed to help current Public School Teachers get quality help in their classrooms with either retired educators, or trained volunteers. It is a data-based platform designed to match current teachers with volunteers who live either in the same school district or city. Both teacher and volunteer fill out a form with a menu of various activities. The teacher marks what he/she needs and the volunteer marks how they would like to help. We will contact you when there is a match.
One School at a Time Campaign - School Ambassador / Volunteer Coordinator
If you are interested in being a Teachers Brigade Ambassador or School Coordinator, please fill out our volunteer form found on this website and call Cindy O'Mealy at 503-830-5077 to confirm your interest. Our website’s platform and organizational model is designed to make it easy for Volunteer Coordinators to connect volunteers with current teachers by zip-code, school district, interest, or region.
Beginning teachers and teachers who are assigned a different grade level will benefit from this program. School Districts need a mentorship program where the mentor can work with the classroom teacher in their classroom on a weekly basis. This program is designed to support the classroom teacher without being evaluated by School District Administrators. We have researched what makes a valuable mentorship. The best kind is for someone to work beside a classroom teacher on a continual basis, develop a trusting relationship so a true dialogue can happen.
Are you a member of an educational organization like OREA (Oregon Retired Educators Association) or OEA Retired that asks members to reach out to either a school or school district each year with a project.? If so, this program has everything you need to get started.
We have created a letter to explain the program to the principal and another letter to mail to teachers. A sign-up sheet is included too. Here is a sample of the teachers’ letter that explains it in a nutshell.
Oregon Retired Educators Association Unit #39 would like to visit your room for 3-5 minutes the morning of:____________________
We are planning to visit various classrooms who would like to participate in our POETRY BREAK project,
A small group of us would visit your classroom in a spontaneous manner waving our Poetry Break sign. You and your class would stop for a moment as we read a poem to you. Afterwards, we would leave a copy of the poem for your students to put in their pocket.
If you are interested in participating, look for a sign-up sheet posted in the Teachers’ Lounge.
We would love to share a little levity with a literary purpose!
Teachers who sign up are willing to have a planned “Interruption” for “Fun” with a “Spark” of “Literacy.”
If you would like a copy email firstname.lastname@example.org
